Friday Flashback: Halloween 1990

Of all the Halloween costumes I had in my childhood, this one was by far my favorite. I'm that ten year old colonial girl there, contemplating the best way to pull a powder frosted donut off a string.

Yep. A colonial girl.

Did I forget to mention that I was the world's dorkiest 4th grader? I even remember a boy from my class making fun of my costume that year and I was like, "Are you kidding me? This is the best costume EVER." (Daniel, I'm still offended that you'd make fun of my totally awesome costume. Just sayin')

This picture was taken at a Girl Scout Halloween party. My troop was as Troop Beverly Hills as you could get - we didn't want to wear uniforms (actually, I secretly did), we didn't want to earn patches for building campfires or learning strong leadership skills (secretly wanted some of those, too)... all our troop did was have parties, go on a couple of field trips, and sell cookies. We completely skipped anything valuable about being in a GS troop (minus the cookie selling... VERY valuable. Caramel Delights are the best) and didn't learn one single thing about team building, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about our own potential and self-worth - kinda the whole point of Girl Scouts, ya know?

Anyway, let me just say, I'm totally digging the mullet behind me. And also, how historically accurate would it be for a colonial girl and a Native American Indian princess to eat donuts together, do you think?

Have a flashback of your own? Head on over to Christopher and Tia's blog for the best meme in town!

xoxo,

Dude, you were a huge dork (which is rad), haha. My girl scout troop actually did those awful leadership skills building activities, and we hated it. I wanted to ear a crap load of patches, but I sucked at everything that got you those patches, so my sash remained empty.

What an awesome costume! Did someone make that for you? I always had the cheapo make shift costumes, so anything that "fancy" I would have envied.

For the life of me, I can't remember very many of my Halloween costumes, well except for the one I wore in the 7th grade...I convinced my friend we were going as hookers, with ZERO concept of what hookers really did for a living. I'm pretty sure I never mentioned to my mom what I was really going as...and most people thought we were punks (we had blue hairspray, punk shades, black tights with short black shirts and shiny tops)

Funny I was THIS close to posting a pic of me in my Girl Scout uniform on the day I won the cake decorating contest for my badge...with my sash full of badges :) I was SO proud of my uniform. I still have my sash :P

Alyssa - surprising, my colonial girl costume came from the costume shop. So random. I guess it was fated that I NEEDED a colonial girl costume.

As for your patches and badges... show off.

Now that I think about it you could have found a part time job working out on the Freedom Trail in Boston doing tours :) It was always funny to hang out on Boston Common and see swarms of tourists following a guide around in colonial garb. You could have also hung around for the daily reenactment of the Battles of Lexington and Concord at the Minute Man National Park!

Alright...maybe next Friday I'll put up the Girl Scout pic...braces, frizzy hair and all!

I'm totally digging it. My elementary school had (still has) Colonial Days and reusing those outfits for Halloween was in vogue.
