At the moment, Gracie and Annelie's favorite activity is filling out their preschool/kindergarten prep workbooks, which is absolutely fine by me, and I can only hope they keep their zeal for learning once school starts.
I'm going to be honest, though. Gracie's kindergarten prep books stress me out a little, because they seem geared toward the three-year-old crowd, not the five-year-old crowd... but then the first grade books are too advanced for her at the moment (she's getting ready to read, but the 1st grade books expect her to already know how to read), so we're are stuck without a happy medium.
Gracie, my far-from-ordinary almost-five-year-old, never fails to crack me up. The activity she was working on yesterday was about the color yellow (see what I mean? Too basic for Kindergarten). This is how our learning time went down:
Me: Alright, Gracie. The instructions say to color in these three objects yellow. What are they?
Gracie: A lemon, a corn, a banana.
Me: Yup. Okay, so you also need to draw something else that is yellow in the empty space. Can you think of another thing that is yellow?
Gracie [matter of fact]: When dogs pee in the snow. That's yellow.
She's right, of course. Dog pee snow is definitely yellow.
Who needs generic answers like the sun, daffodils, or yellow ducks, when you can answer with dog pee snow? That's Gracie for ya. She's always thinking outside of the box.

HAHA. She's a funny girl :) I love the stuff she comes up with.
P.S. Ivy has those jammies on right now :)
I have quite an assortment of K-prep books for Bridget, and she refuses to touch them. But that's okay. Having done the whole kindergarten thing twice already, I'm not too worried about her. I will never forget what my oldest's kindergarten teacher said to me at open house more than five years ago. It was something along the lines of, "As long as kids can use the bathroom by themselves, zip their own jackets, and tie their own shoes before starting kindergarten, I'll teach them the rest."
LOL When Sami was working in those books, she liked to draw "paint blobs" in the something else category.
Me: Sami, you need to draw something else than a paint blob.
Sami: But paint blobs come in all the colors!
hahaha, so long as she's not using that yellow snow to make a snow cone out of, she's good :)
hahahahahaha
I love Gracie so hard!
I'm going to have to work on this with both kids very soon. We had a financial...issue come up lately and both will have to be pulled out of preschool at the end of April. Amelia is probably already at K level and I have the workbooks but she fights any formal teaching from me, so I'm going to REALLY think outside of the box to come up with a plan for her...and for Merrick.
Nice that she observed the color of "special" snow :)
She's so smart. She'll never give a generic answer once she's in school, that's for sure. Can't wait for your parent/teacher conferences. "You'll never believe what Gracie said..." :o)
WOW,amazing answer! What a doll! Now the real question, how to draw yellow snow?? LOL
Your daughter = genius = ready for kindergarten! ;-)
nice... also. how do you draw pee in the snow?
From the mouths of babes - too cute!

ah ha haha! That made me laugh so hard. So honest:) she is sucha cutie.
haha! So did she actually draw dog pee in the snow? I'd love to see that!
I didn't know you could buy books like that, I'd love to have some for my 3-yo. I'm planning to homeschool, so I'd like to start a simple regiment now to get her used to it.
Oh my gosh! That is too funny! What a smart little lady:) I'll bet she's prepping to be an amazing artist just like her Mommy! I just signed up to follow your blog...can't believe I haven't done so sooner! It's just so cute!
