The Best Thing About 5-Year-Olds...

Okay, so remember three days ago when I all like, "Awwwww! My little baby is almost five and growing up and I wish she would stay teeny tiny forever!"

Well...

I changed my tune. And spent the whole day yesterday jumping with joy over the fact that in only two days, Gracie will officially be old enough to fly unaccompanied, which means when she spends the entire day giving me nothing but attitude (like yesterday for example) I can book a flight to Austin for her and call my mom to say, "Hey, can you pick up Gracie? You'll find her at gate 6, waiting for you. You can send her back next week. Or next month. Or next year. Or whenever this humongous attitude she's developed goes away."

That would be really great.

*sigh*

A mom can dream, right?

It's Monday, which means Mama Drama day over at The Mama Dramalogues. If you've got a kid-related blog post, come on over and link it to ours!

xoxo,

wow, really, its only 5 years old? I guess I remember doing it when I was 6 or 7, but 5 seems so young!

ok but when I think back to when I was 5, I felt like I was still a baby. Most of my memories start around that age.

but when I look at my almost 4 year old, she acts like shes 16.

And she'll be sweet as an angel with your mom and your mom will call you and say "she's as sweet as an angel" and the fligh attendants will say "she's as sweet as an angel" and then tearfully your mom will send her home and she'll come home to you and be the devil.

Oh wait, this is my kid I'm talking about.

Kears... omg, do we have the same kid?

Tia - I KNOW! What is up with these teeny little teenagers trapped in preschooler bodies?

What a darling picture!
I flew alone when I was six and my mom waited with me on the plane til take off and my grandpa picked me up immediately as I walked off the plane. I'm not sure they can do that anymore!

I checked. Southwest Airlines still lets kids above age 5 to fly alone. But I was sort of kidding (well, only because I have to be) because only American Airlines flies out of my town. So. I'm stuck with the kid. Oh joy!

If you sent her to your mom, you'd seriously be kicking yourself because here is what would happen: Like Kearsie said, she would suddenly turn into a little angel because she'd be the only kid with your mom getting lots and lots of attention because your mom doesn't get to see her everyday and she would treat her like a little princess. And then you would be stuck at home with nobody to help entertain Annielie all day long, so Annielie would expect you to replace Gracie and play My Little Ponies and Barbie and whatever else little girls do. (I only have boys, so I don't know what the girls play these days.) And she might even ask you to paint a bunch of green glitter on her face (yeah, that post was so funny I called my husband in to see the pics and read the story).

5 does seem really young to be allowed to fly alone.

Learning this makes me a little sad that both sets of grandparents live so close to us... Because see, if I had to fly them there, they couldn't just call me and have me come pick them up... But Kearsie's right, they're little cherubs when they're with the grandparents.

I remember when my son starting flying alone ... he was 8 ... I was a complete and total wreck every single time! When he turned 11, he was no longer considered an unescorted minor and they wouldn't put one of the purple pockets with his info on him ... I just can't imagine an 11 yr old on their own in an airport ... his dad and I still get security passes and sit with him til he gets on the plane and we're standing at the gate when he arrives ... and I'm still a total wreck every time he flies and he's almost 15!

btw Gracie has beautiful eyes!!!

Thanks, everyone! There's no way I'd ever really send her off on her own - just the idea of sending her off to kindergarten in the fall gives me heart palpatations.

But its a nice thought sometimes!

Hee hee, but Gracie is so cute and looks like an angel! (I know, I know, that's what people said about me when I was little too and I promise my mom had a very different opinion on that subject.) Wow, flying alone at 5... I don't think I flew alone until I was 22. Yep. Pathetic, I know.

That child is dangerously GOOD LOOKING...nice gene pool there my friend!

You got me thinking with the aeroplane thing....do you think I can send my hubby on a one-way ticket to new Mexico when his snores blast me out of the bed at night?

Just askin!

Julie - How funny! I didn't fly alone until I was 22, either. And it terrified me!

AnnMarie - all the way to New Mexico from Greece? Wow, he must snore VERY loudly!! And thank you! :)
